Roberta Roman, born in Italy and living in Paris since 1991, is a classical guitarist and musical researcher renowned for her virtuosity, eclecticism and intellectual commitment. Trained at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, she continued her studies at the École Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot with Alberto Ponce and Betho Davezac, before obtaining a Diploma in Performance and a Doctorate in Concert in Venice.
From the outset, she has distinguished herself in the contemporary repertoire, performing works by composers such as Juan Trigos, Massimiliano Viel and Luca Cori. She collaborates with ensembles such as the Orchestre ProArte, developing an approach to the guitar that is both demanding and open to modern forms. Settled in Paris, she discovered Argentine tango, which became for her a privileged field of expression where emotion, rigor and dialogue between cultures merge.
In 1996, she founded the Roberta Roman Triofeaturing guitar, bandoneon and cello. The group’s repertoire combines traditional tango, Astor Piazzolla’s Tango Nuevo and original compositions. Together, they tour the stages of Europe and Latin America, playing in prestigious venues such as the Théâtre National de Chaillot, Milan’s Teatro Metropolitano and Catania’s Amphitheatre. The trio has shared the stage with artists as diverse as Pink Martini, Gotan Project, Richard Galliano and Juan Carlos Caceres.
To this stage career is added a dimension of musical research. Roberta Roman is interested in the historical links between Argentine tango and Neapolitan song, giving rise to the project T4NO – Tango Napoletano. This work resonates the popular musical heritage of southern Italy with the forms of tango, integrating mandolin, bass, percussion, and even Neapolitan rap with artists such as Lucariello. This lively re-reading of musical traditions underlines their potential for transformation and encounter.
In 2023, she published Little Naples – Operation Sultan vol. 2a concept album paying tribute to Marseille’s Neapolitan community. In collaboration with historian Michel Ficetola, Roberta recounts a popular memory marked by exile, social struggles and forgotten tragedies, such as Operation Sultan in 1943. This collective project brings together musicians and singers from diverse backgrounds, including Akhenaton, Petra Magoni, Raiz, Lucariello, Manu Théron, Vincent Beer-Demander, Antonella Mazza, Claude Salmieri and Marisa Mercadé.
Roberta Roman is also deeply committed to teaching. Selected between 2018 and 2021 as one of the twelve “Génération Spedidam” artists, she now teaches guitar at the Erik Satie Conservatory in Bagnolet, passionately transmitting her knowledge and vision of music that is committed, alive and open to the world.
His rich discography bears witness to his singular career path, spanning contemporary albums, tango pieces, hybrid explorations and transdisciplinary creations. Key recordings include The Four Seasons, Angeles y Demonios, Journey to Sorrentoand the volumes of the project Little Naples.
Roberta Roman is a rare figure: a musician who places art at the crossroads of excellence, humanity and memory. Her guitar is by turns lyrical, militant, poetic or political – an instrument at the service of dialogue, storytelling and the linking of cultures.
